Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating a crash that killed one man and seriously injured 5 kids.
At approximately 7:39 a.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to W. Washington St. and the exit ramp of I-465 S/B. reference a serious crash involving multiple injuries.
Officers and firefighters from the Wayne Township Fire Department arrived and found several critically injured persons including children. A driver and 5 children were located in a gray Honda SUV and a second driver was located in a gold Ford SUV. The driver of the gray SUV was pronounced deceased at the scene. The five children riding inside the gray SUV were transported to IU Health Riley Hospital for Children by EMS personnel; 3 were transported in critical condition, 1 in serious condition and 1 in stable condition. The driver of the gold SUV was transported, by EMS personnel in serious condition to IU Health Methodist Hospital. Detectives are still verifying ages of the children and the surviving driver. The deceased driver’s name will not be released until his family has been properly notified.
Witnesses have told investigators that the gold SUV was heading west on W. Washington St. approaching the intersection of the exit ramp of I-465 SB. Witnesses told investigators that the gold SUV was driving erratically and at a high rate of speed when it collided with the gray SUV. Investigators believe that the gray SUV was proceeding into the intersection, with the traffic light being green, when it was struck by the gold SUV.
Investigators will have the surviving driver’s blood tested for intoxicants, a standard procedure involving accidents where a fatality or serious injury have occurred. No arrest has occurred, however this is an active investigation. The section of W. Washington St between I-465 EB on ramp and I-465 SB exit ramp will be closed for approximately another 20 minutes as investigators continue their investigation.
