Fatal wrong-way driver crash on I-65

Indiana State Police say one person is dead and two others are injured after a wrong-way driver collided with vehicles on Interstate 65.

According to authorities, the multi-vehicle crash occurred around 1 a.m. on I-65 southbound near mile marker 104.6, just south of 465 near Edgewood Avenue.

A preliminary investigation shows a passenger vehicle was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-65. The wrong-way vehicle struck an SUV head-on, and two other vehicles were struck after the initial impact.

The person killed — later identified as 29-year-old Christopher Kattman, of Greenwood — was the driver of the wrong-way vehicle.

Investigators will work with the Marion County Coroner’s Office and the Indiana Department of Toxicology to determine if alcohol was a factor in this crash. All tests for alcohol are currently pending.

ISP says while on the crash scene, troopers discovered two other alleged drunk drivers driving near the scene. One person drove around emergency vehicles into the closed scene, and when ordered to stop, the driver backed into a stationary fire truck, according to state police. That driver was arrested for operating while intoxicated. Authorities found another driver in the backed up traffic to be intoxicated and placed them under arrest as well.

Investigators were on the scene for nearly six hours investigating the crash.
