Will the road safety projects help prevent car accidents?
Fort Wayne, Indiana recently received $5.6 million in federal funding designed to improve the city's streets and hopefully prevent car accidents in the future at certain dangerous intersections where pedestrians and others are often at risk, according to a Fox 55 Fort Wayne news story about the improvement projects.
"Neighborhoods are the backbone of Fort Wayne, and I'm encouraged by our Public Works Division's ongoing commitment to leading infrastructure improvement projects that will have a lasting and meaningful impact," Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said in an interview with Fox 55 News.
Road improvement projects slated for Fort Wayne, IN
Recently, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the City of Fort Wayne's Public Works Division a $5.6 million federal grant as part of the Safe Streets and Roads for All program, according to Fox 55 News. Since 2014, Fort Wayne has spent more than $297 million on neighborhood infrastructure improvements.
The recent $5.6 million in federal funding will be spent on "improvements to the Broadway & Taylor corridors and will address substantial safety problems along two roadway corridors and multiple access points and intersections," according to Fox 55 News.
Such road improvements include the construction of a single-lane roundabout, pedestrian islands in the middle of the road, making crosswalks more visible, and installing traffic calming features designed to slow down traffic, Fox 55 News reported.
Why are improvements being made to Fort Wayne's Broadway & Taylor corridor?
The federally-funded improvements are being made due to "safety issues" involving Fort Wayne's Broadway and Taylor corridor. Specifically, such safety issues involve "left turn crashes, speeding, and pedestrian safety issues," according to Fox 55 News.
"The Broadway and Taylor corridors are a vital part of our local transportation system," Mayor Henry said in an interview with Fox 55 News. "Being in position to make necessary upgrades through this federal grant will enhance safety, traffic flow and quality of life for motorists, residents and nearby neighborhoods."
