First responders in Boone County were busy this weekend. They responded to a car crash on Sunday morning and a helicopter crash on Sunday afternoon.
The car crash happened around 8:30 a.m. The Lebanon Police Department, Boone County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Lebanon Fire Department, Whitestown Fire Department, and Boone County EMS were dispatched to a collision on I-65 northbound at the 138 mile-marker exit ramp.
Officers said they found one car that had left the interstate and was on its roof near Perryworth Road. The car was driven by 40-year-old Francis Craig of Indianapolis.
Craig was driving in the left lane when for an unknown reason, the car crossed over the middle and right lane before rolling through the ditch and coming to a stop. 54-year-old Damon Debard was in the passenger seat. He was ejected from the car.
Debard was taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with life-threatening injuries. Craig was taken to Methodist
Hospital in Indianapolis with minor injuries. This collision is currently being investigated by the Boone County Fatal Alcohol Crash Team.
About five hours later, first responders were called to a helicopter crash at XPO Logistics, located at 135 South Mt. Zion Road. Arriving officers found a 1958 Sikorsky S-58JT Helicopter that had come into contact with a semi-trailer that was parked next to the building.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Sikorsky was owned by Midwest Helicopter Airways, Inc. out of Willowbrook, Illinois. It was flown by 50-year-old Pilot Randy McCormick from Manteno, Illinois. There were two additional crew members on board.
After landing, the blades on the Sikorsky struck the empty semi-trailer, sending debris in the adjacent parking lot and drives. There was an additional semi-trailer and three passenger cars that were struck by debris.
Pilot McCormick suffered minor injuries in this incident. There were no other injuries as a result of this incident. This incident is being investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.
