At approximately 1:08 Wednesday afternoon the Indiana State Police responded to a call of an inverted vehicle on I-70 eastbound at the 65.2 mile marker. Trooper Jon Myers arrived on the scene shortly after the 911 call and found an inverted vehicle down an embankment partially submerged in water. Bystanders had stopped to help and were working to pull the driver out of the vehicle. The driver was unconscious and not breathing, still seat belted in the vehicle. Efforts by first responders to revive the victim were unsuccessful and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Just before the crash, a concerned driver had called 911 to report this vehicle as driving all over the roadway in Putnam County. Police were responding to the area but were unable to get to the vehicle before it crashed. Marks on the roadway indicate the vehicle first ran off the roadway to the left side and then swerved back across both lanes into the ditch on the right side of the roadway.
This was a single vehicle crash and the only occupant of the vehicle was the driver Bruce Stuart of Greencastle Indiana, who is deceased. This is an ongoing investigation, as with all serious crashes the driver’s blood will be tested for intoxication. There is no further information available at this time.
